What you pay for self storage depends on far more than the size of the unit. Location, the length of your stay, introductory offers, VAT and insurance can make two quotes that look alike very different. This guide explains what goes into the price and how to compare providers properly.
How self storage is priced in the UK
Most providers quote a price per week, and many bill every four weeks rather than every calendar month. Thirteen four-week periods make a year, so a four-weekly bill comes round one more time than a monthly one. To compare two providers fairly, work out what each would cost you over the whole time you need the space.
On storabble you see every price per week, so you can compare listings side by side. Where a provider has published its prices, they are on the listing; otherwise you will find them on the provider's website.
What affects the price
1. Size
The bigger the unit, the higher the price, but smaller units usually cost more per square foot than larger ones. Choosing the right size is the easiest way to save, see our guide on what size storage unit you need.
2. Location
Centres in city centres and in London cost more than those on the edge of town. If a short drive is no problem, a centre a little further out often gives you more space for the same money.
3. Length of stay
Many providers reward longer stays with a lower weekly rate, while short stays are more flexible but often cost more per week.
4. Facilities and access
Drive-up units, 24-hour access, climate control, CCTV and staff on site all play a part. Container storage on an open yard is usually cheaper than a unit inside a building.
What to check in a quote
VAT
Self storage is subject to VAT at the standard rate in the UK. Some providers quote prices including VAT, others without, especially to business customers. Check which one you are looking at before you compare.
Insurance or contents cover
Most centres require your goods to be insured, either through their own cover or your home insurance. Ask what it costs per week, as it adds to the price.
Introductory offers
Discounts for the first weeks are common. Check how long the offer lasts and what the normal rate is afterwards.
One-off costs
Ask about deposits, admin fees and whether you need to buy a padlock.
How to save on self storage
- Compare providers: storabble shows you the self storage centres near you on one page.
- Pick the right size: do not pay for space you do not use, and stack up to the ceiling.
- Declutter first: sell, donate or recycle what you will not need again.
- Ask about offers: if no offer is advertised, ask the provider directly. Some publish discount codes on their storabble listing.
- Check the notice period: so you do not pay for storage longer than you need it.
